Extensions

In brief

Tier 2 owners can request a two-year extension in the Clean Buildings Portal between six months before and six months after the July 1, 2027 deadline (January 1, 2027 to January 1, 2028). It needs supporting documentation and the extension reporting tool. An extension does not earn the incentive.

Accepted reasons (at least one)

  • Circumstances beyond your control that substantially interfere with compliance
  • Recent change of ownership
  • Financial restrictions
  • New construction, additions or major remodels
  • Benchmarking is complete, but more time is needed for the EMP and O&M program

When an extension ends, the owner or authorized representative must submit a compliance or exemption application (CBPS 044).

Extension or full compliance?

If your building is served by a participating utility, full compliance may earn about $0.30 per sq ft (not guaranteed), so a 30,000 sq ft building could forgo about $9,000 by extending instead. We prepare either one for a flat fee; request a quote.
